Immodest Dress in the Church: Like Frogs in Boiling Water
Having been raised in the seventies and eighties with very little sense of modesty, where short shorts and tube tops were the norm. I can see clearly now some of the harm that has come from it. I wasn't given the opportunity to develop normally and just be myself without the extra focus on my body (by myself mostly). Even though I didn't think of myself as 'sexy', I can see where I was 'objectified'...made to feel that looking pretty was my primary mission...how very, very sad. I want so much more for my own daughter.

I was born in 1961 and I ALWAYS wore a dress when going to Mass...I think that when I was in high school in the late 1970's, I noticed more and more of my peers wearing jeans. I eventually did start wearing jeans (although my mother was upset with me for that) and adults in Church would give you dirty looks for it.
Today, the skirts are so short, I am embarrassed for not only the child, but for the parents as well. My daughter is 8 and I won't even let her wear long Bermuda shorts to Mass.
I sometimes wish that things would go back to the way they were back in the 60's and 70's...being respectful in Church, wearing a lace veil on our heads and Sunday clothes...I can dream can't I?

PS How is your friend Sue (I think she is in Washington state)...has she started writing on her blog again?
